Day One of Chicks

  • Make sure the box is ready.
  • Put wood shavings in if you are using it.
  • Have the food and water ready in the box. You won't want to do it after the chicks get in the box.
  • Set up the heat lamp, if not done already.
  • Bring the chicks home.
  • As you place each of them in the box, look them over and just look for anything unusual. You'll probably see a bump on some of the chicks beak. It's called the egg tooth. It'll fall off within a day or two. You don't need to worry about it. The chicks' eyes should be open and bright. All the chicks should be able to spread their feet and walk.
  • Check the heat. Place your hand at the bottom of the box. It should feel warm. Adjust as needed. You should also watch the chicks. If they are huddling close to the heat lamp; it's too far away. If they are huddling in the furtherest corner; it's too close. They should be able to walk everywhere in the box.
